A vision in pink.

He blinked hard to be sure he was seeing what he thought.

It was a woman standing in the open doorway of the morgue. Her long, almost waist length dark hair flowed over a pink dress that nearly reached her ankles. Her feet were bare.

Daniel’s heart began to beat double time in his chest, as she crooked a finger at him.

Was she real? Or was she some spirit of a former patient from Barrow Haven?

He seen some oddities over the years, most likely because of his eternal condition. But never a ghost or spirit like this one. She absolutely shined, and he found himself rooted to the spot, unable to lift his sneakered feet.

Chapter One

I died for a short while the first time we met. There was no fluttering in my chest, no somersault of my stomach, no burning in my loins; my heart literally stopped. He was tall, at least six foot four, and dressed in a pair of worn indigo jeans that perfectly matched his intense stare. A silk black shirt covered what I imagined to be a ripple of hard muscle, and opened at the top showing a dusting of tight dark curls. His thick neck led towards a razor-sharp, square jaw line, a straight nose that had clearly never seen the ill-effects of rough play, and deep hooded eyes. His hair had been styled with a slight wave. I was sure it was dark brown, but it could have easily been black, and had shots of silver-grey streaking through it.

My face was lined up with his toes, or more precisely, his pristinely polished black patent Chukka boots. Palms down in the thick mud beneath me, I pushed up and sneaked a glance at the man in front of me. He looked none-too-pleased to see his clothes spattered with flecks of dirt from where I had landed and splashed him.

British author, Charlotte Howard, was born in Oman and spent much of the first part of her life flitting between Oman, Scotland, and England. Now settled in Somerset, Charlotte lives with her husband, two children, and growing menagerie of pets.

Her career as a writer began at an early age, with a poem being featured in an anthology for the East Midlands. Since then Charlotte has written many short stories and poems, and finally wrote her first full-length piece of fiction in 2010.

“Dwi’n caru ti,” he rasped in Welsh, rounding out his vowels and sharpening his Rs.

AUTHOR TOP TEN WRITING TIPS

1. Write about something that interests you, something that you like to read.

For me, I love to read shifters, aliens, cowboys, sports…ok, everything romance! So far, I have written shifters, aliens, contemporary, and ghost romances!

2. Find your writing inspiration style.

I am a visual person, so it helps me to find an actor/model/sports person/etc. to base a character's looks. When I get stuck, I can look at some pictures, or even watch some interviews, and usually come up with ideas.

3. If you get stuck (or have writer's block), read back over the story so far.

Not only will you edit along the way, this should also help you to get ideas of what you have not covered yet, or where the next logical step is for the story.

4. Never give up!

If you lack inspiration, put the story aside for a day or two. Start something else if you must. I guarantee the characters will start demanding you return (in your head). Yes, my characters get VERY demanding! Especially if I am writing something else and they think it should be their turn to get their own story. Bossy characters!

5. Do not write flowery words or add a bunch of stuff that does not further the story.

Waxing poetic just to lengthen a story to what you want it to be is never good, and readers will call you out on it.

6. Find good beta-readers.

People you trust, that will give you honest opinions. You don't want "Yes" men or women, you want honesty. But you must also take the criticism well, and know they are trying to help you make the best story.

7. Find a good editor, or two!

I feel like this is the most important step of all, because readers are super quick to judge if a story is poorly written with wrong words/grammar/etc.

8. Read other people's work.

Read often, even when writing your own story. I am not saying to take ideas from someone else, but the flow of creativity is high when reading, and it can help inspire you for your own story!

9. Since I edit/format quite often: learn how to write properly!

A story needs TWO spaces between sentences, and turn on the "show/hide paragraph marks"! Do not add extra spaces at the end of a paragraph. Those TWO things will make your life (of the life of your editor/formator) so much easier for publication!

10. Enjoy the experience!

When I wrote my first story for publication, I was certain that I'd be the only one reading it…ever!  While I have read it more than a dozen times, I never tire of it! It is a great little short story (Shifted For Love), and it proves to me that I was right! I wrote the story for myself, because I enjoy writing. The fact that I stuck with it and published it still makes me proud! Absolutely awe-inspiring though, is the fact that others have read it - and continue to read other stories written by me! The first time someone tells you how much they enjoyed the story, and they leave a review - nothing but pure JOY!

ONE EXTRA TIP FOR READERS: If you enjoy a story, write a review. If it made you laugh/cry/angry - in a good way, find a way to contact the author. Facebook PM or twitter, whatever. I promise you that it will make an author's day if you tell them how much you enjoyed their story!
