EXCERPT

The incline was steep, but I was determined to get to the top. I wanted to be up high to see the world from a different vantage point, to get some insight into why I was so messed up and maybe find the answers. I used my hands to brace myself over the rock formations. The climb was hard work, but it served to warm up my body from the dropping temperatures.
“Ella, you have to go home. I can’t protect you from threats that are alive -- the cold is enough to harm you, but what about mountain lions, rattlers and the rest? It’s practically dark. I can’t stay if you don’t want me to.”
I stopped for a moment and turned to see Nate’s beautiful eyes, showing concern and begging me to turn back around, but I needed to think, to make sense of my life once and for all. Was I seeing a ghost or simply holding onto my memories, and if so, was that so wrong? Chasing this shadow was the only thing that had made me feel whole in the wake of so much sorrow, that is until Ethan came along. And now, I felt a myriad of emotions vacillating in my mind, from guilt over betraying Nate’s memory to feeling a sense of entitlement that I deserved to be happy.

BOOK INFORMATION

TITLE – Keeping Up SERIES (& Book #) – Hollywood Hotties, #2 AUTHOR – Mia Fox GENRE – chick-lit / satire PUBLISHER – Evatopia Press COVER ARTIST – Eden Crane

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Keeping Up - Book Cover

Since the time she was in elementary school, Katie has wanted to be like beautiful, blonde Amanda Exeter, a woman she views with equal amounts of disdain and admiration. After years of hoping and wishing, Katie believes she has finally arrived. She and her husband, Rich, move into he same gated community as Amanda.
But the moving truck has no sooner left their driveway, when Katie decides that something is terribly wrong. The ‘move-in condition’ home now seems obviously void of what the neighbors have -- built-in barbecues, french doors, imported fabrics, not to mention his and hers luxury vehicles in the garage.
Katie’s efforts to remake herself and Rich as the neighborhood’s newest “It” couple backfires as her hair-brained plot to climb the social ladder fails. When it comes to fitting in with the neighborhood women, Katie is out of her league.
Decorating confuses her as she has no concept about what the “right white” means. A prosthetic pouch replaces a bulging tummy as pregnancy has also escaped Katie. In his bid for city council, Rich covers the political spectrum of hot topics, but lands in hot water.
As they devise popularity schemes, they fall victim to repeated cases of mistaken identity and are believed to be drug smugglers, sexy swingers, Internet pornography actors, and even pet kidnappers.
For Katie and Rich Pettigrew, “keeping up” is harder than they ever imagined.

“I got pregnant at sixteen. First time out in fact. After that, I was changed.” Katie grabbed a tissue from her purse as Elizabeth offered her a chair and a comforting arm around her back.
“My mom was so angry. After that she created a reminder phrase about safe sex that I could use with guys I dated. She must have had a new one every time I left the house.”
Elizabeth looked shocked. “Every time?”
Katie nodded and started reciting. “It will be sweeter if you wrap your peter. Don’t be silly, protect your willy. If you think she’s spunky, cover your monkey. Don’t be a prick, cover your...”
“I think I get the picture,” Elizabeth insisted before Katie could finish her last thought.

 EXCERPT

I entered the office conference room to find my assistant, Bebe, busily applying a green tea, mud mask to our Creative Director’s neck. Thus far, my assistants have either needed extensive training, or have just reached the point where they are well-trained and realize they are too advanced to be an assistant. Bebe was thankfully at the in-between stage, good for at least another six months before the threat of quitting would arise unless given a raise. She had also recently relocated to Los Angeles from Atlanta so hopefully she didn’t have enough connections for me to worry about her being poached by another firm. The only obvious health benefit I could discern from Bebe bathing Josh Cohen in this green goo was he couldn’t request anything from me for fear of cracking its cakey exterior.
The firm’s president, Bruce Lindsay, was the only person senior to Josh. My three years at Cohen & Lindsay Creative revealed that Bruce brought forth the money, while Josh supplied an element of peculiar that the media and our clients interpreted as “genius.”
I stepped over Josh’s supine figure and leaned down to where Bebe was kneeling amidst bowls of slime. “I don’t suppose you could give me a hand?” I asked.
“Of course. Just as soon as Josh has been thoroughly cleansed.”
“Send him to church,” I whispered. “I need you more.”
Another ten minutes passed before Bebe appeared. “What took you? I’m on the verge of a life seizure.”
Within the hour I had Bebe retrieve that day’s edition of Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety before Josh retreated into the bathroom with them. I never liked reading the mags after someone else had folded and fiddled with the different sections, disrupting their natural order and creasing the pages. The thought of going through a paper that had been exposed to Josh’s bathroom air was even worse.
“Are they fresh?” I asked.
“Of course, they’re pre-prune,” she said knowingly.
I grabbed for the papers and began feverishly turning the pages until I found what I wanted.
“Ooh, news about Ryan? Hurry, I wanna see, too,” she said leaning over my shoulder.
I fumbled with the papers a minute, turning to the “First Look” and “Talent Watch”
sections, trying in vein to find any news about Ryan that might give me a sign as to who or what had brought on this epiphany. “Bebe, I don’t think we’re in luck this morning.”
“Okie dokie, I’ll just check on Josh if you don’t need me.”
I waited until Bebe skipped across the hall to Josh’s office before returning to the section that would really give me an answer...my horoscope.
Aries: Love relationship on tender hooks while moon is in Jupiter; give partner space for personal growth. Focus on quiet solitude to promote healing.
I understand the theory of planetary pull, but in my experience, the planets never pull for me. The realization has forced me to discover my own astrological solution. If I find anything remotely negative with my horoscope, Aries (March 21-April 20 to be exact), I search for another sign more suitable. I figure with rising signs, birth signs, moon signs, and sun signs we’re all somehow related to nearly every sign. When the planets are completely ignorant of my needs, I form a sort of horoscope soufflĂ©, gently folding in portions of one reading to add to another.
My mother, a devout horoscope follower and Hints from Heloise reader, is convinced my practice can only lead to heartache and poor investments. My sister, Melissa, fears horoscopes reduce spontaneity by causing unnecessary consideration of one’s actions. In the continuum of my family, I fall somewhere in between.
“Give partner space for personal growth.” Right. As if I could sit idle and allow Ryan to nab more boyfriends than my life’s total. I had to do something to correct this injustice. Ryan was obviously insane, and I was meant to be with him!

As we entered the bar, my appetite became stunted with the sight of Phineas sitting in my favorite seat with two leggy blondes on either side of him. They looked to be about twenty-one with the sexual confidence of cougars as evidence by the fact that one had her hand on Phineas’ upper thigh and the other had an arm around his neck. He whispered into each of their ears, and they immediately left.
I thought about turning and leaving as well, but without even a glance in my direction, he spoke. “It’s about time.”
“I see that you’re not suffering from loneliness with Charlotte gone,” I seethed.
“I don’t even know them. They just...made themselves at home,” Phineas shrugged.
He was as handsome as ever so it was easy to see why he wouldn’t be alone at a bar, but still the sight of him with a girl other than sweet, seventeen-year-old Charlotte, when I knew how she had fallen for him and what the result of that infatuation had been for her, made me shake with anger.
“And you just couldn’t bring yourself to ask them to leave?”
“Suzette, everyone has their own ways of handling grief.”
My mouth dropped open with the implication of his words. Samantha had lost her life and Charlotte may have thrown hers away and for what? The mistake of falling for the wrong guy.

Malibu Angel - Book Cover

BOOK SYNOPSIS

All Sam wants is to serve out his time as a guardian angel so that he can return as a human. But his sentence becomes more complicated when he finds himself falling in love with Angeline, his current assignment.
The rules of angels specify that he may not interfere with the course of her life, which naturally includes her dating choices. When Angeline begins surf lessons at the same beach where Sam is assigned to work as a lifeguard, a connection forms between them and the rules of angels collide with the laws of attraction. Sam finds it even harder to keep his distance when he discovers Angeline’s surf instructor hides a dangerous secret.
With Angeline’s life in jeopardy, the lines between his role as a lifeguard and that of guardian angel become blurred. Sam’s choices will redefine his role as a guardian angel to Angeline and force him to contemplate what will become of their love if he is sent away. Whether they find their way back to each other is a question written in the heavens.

Angeline gave a noticeable pout. “I’ve been riding the kiddie waves all week. I was really hoping to test out what I’ve learned...but as I said, my instructor seems to be AWOL. Hey, do you think you could take me?”
Sam looked up to the tower at Evan, unsure how to proceed. He would have done anything to say yes right on the spot, but that would certainly get him into trouble. Then again, to send her out alone was irresponsible and could endanger her safety. Knowing exactly how Sam’s mind was playing a game of angel versus devil, Evan shook his head slightly to which Sam rolled his eyes at his new friend, but nodded recognition nonetheless.
“I’d love to, really I would. But, I’m on duty.”
“Oh, of course. That was silly of me. Hey, I’m sorry I bothered you,” Angeline said as she started to turn away from the tower.
“You’re not a bother. Come by anytime. I’ve got sandwiches!” he called out as she headed back down the beach.
Evan smirked at him. “I’ve got sandwiches? Now that’s an original pick-up line.”
Sam ran a hand through his golden hair. “Tell me I didn’t I really say that.”
“Just wondering...did that kind of line work when you were alive?”
Sam smiled in spite of his embarrassment. “Actually, girls found me to be quite cute and charming.”
As if validating his point, Angeline looked over her shoulder at Sam, but seeing him still watching her, she immediately turned back and continued walking to her spot on the beach.
Evan raised his eyes skyward. “Trouble. That’s all I’m gonna say.”
Placing his arms behind his head and leaning back against the lifeguard tower, Sam surveyed his domain over the pristine Malibu beach, taking in the sun, surf, and the beautiful swaying of Angeline’s hips. “That’s the type of trouble that makes life...and the afterlife...worth living.”
