~More About Brooke Lee~

Growing up, Brooke’s mother instilled a deep respect for the English language and a love of words. She taught Brooke to read and write and shared her appreciation for poetry. As a teen, poetry became an outlet for Brooke’s innermost thoughts and deepest, often times darkest feelings.

In school, teachers always told her “write what you know”, so that is what she did. At the not so tender age of forty-three, she started to write her first novel, I Am ShelbyJames (Beauty in the Darkness) and it is what she knows—emotions.

Oh cotton, of course. Silk sheets and Florida humidity don’t mix well.

It’s a simple tutu from a trunk I found in the Attic. Cool right?

What are we snacking on in bed while we read tonight?

I hope you don’t mind the fig spread with the baked brie. It goes so we’ll with the apples don’t you think?

If I open this nightstand drawer, what will I find?

Nothing but hand cream, hair clips and batteries. Oh and maybe some lube. The good stuff is in a larger lock box, lol. *Wink*

Do you roll up in the blankets like a burrito, or kick the covers off during the night?

Oh I’m a total burrit, my tootsies get chilly. Just ask the hubs. He swears I put them in the freezer before bed.

Can I put my cold feet on your calves to warm them up?

Oh please do, I am a very touchy feely kinda gal.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

I’ve been writing my whole life. I have always written poetry and I really enjoyed writing papers in school and the occasional article. My mom stressed the importance of grammar and imparted her love of words. She’s a much better writer than I.  I think writing is in my DNA.

How did you come up with this story line?

Without giving too much away, I will say that the story of Reflecting Roni is a continuation of my first book, I Am ShelbyJames. It follows the life of Roni Monroe and explains why both she and Shelby James have issues with love and relationships. The “darkness” of the story is two fold, part taken from my own life and part from things I’ve seen or heard about through social media. Both aspects called to me to put the story down on paper.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?

Hmmm, gotta go with an easy one I see. Well, the best would be being able to express myself in any way I see fit. I get to live my fantasies or expell my nightmares in my writing. I suppose the worst aspect would be the emotional toll it sometimes takes to get the words out. While writing the darkest part of this book I fell into a depression for more than a week because of what the characters were going through.

What inspires you to write?

Life. There is no recipe for the way I write. Although I will say that I seem to write better poetry at either really low or high points of my mood swings. The darker the poetry the deeper into the abyss my mind has fallen. The sexier stuff means either I’m really well sated or horny as hell.

How did you conduct your research for Reflecting Roni?

Much of the story is my imagination, but for main driving thread, I reached out to those in the know and sought their opinion.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes?

“I have to be brazen and bold. If not, the world will eat me up and spit me out.”

“With us both naked, I assume we are going to forego dinner and move right to dessert. But I would be wrong.”

“When Roni taunted me with the scent on her fingers tonight—the sweet scent of her best friend—I swear I almost shot a load in my shorts.”

What would your friends say is your best quality?

My best quality is my ability to love. My heart has no limits and wants to offer love to all who deserve it.

Are reader reviews important to you?

Important? I suppose yes. I mean I love the good reviews, they validate my work. I’m enough of a narcissist that I enjoy the positive feedback. That said, like everyone else, I would love to make a living doing what I love and it seems that the only way to get my work noticed is through reviews, so yeah they are important.

What do you do when you don’t write?

Think about writing, lol. It seems my brain is always working on putting words together in some cohesive form. It may take months to get them out, but I’ve always got one eye on the next poem or story.

Tell us about your other books?

 

I Am ShelbyJames Beauty in the Darkness book 1, is the introduction to the duo that is Shelby James and Roni Monroe. These two women  are more than destroyed friends, they are soulmates. In this book we see what happens when the line between friends and lovers is crossed. But it’s more than that. It’s about learning to believe in yourself, love and find your beauty even in the Darkness.

 

I Am The Muse Poet, book 2 is all of Shelby’s poetry. The poems explore all aspects of emotions from Shelby's perspective.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?

I'm just me! I have tried to be who others want me to be and failed. Now I’m learning to love and accept who I am and if that doesn’t work for you, I’m sorry. I can’t not be me.

It’s been a blast hanging out with you, Muffy, but sadly we must wrap this up. The hubs will be home soon and he doesn’t need to get the wrong idea seeing the two of us in bed together. I mean he has read my work so it would take much for him to jump to that conclusion.
