Blurb:

Anneke’s typical day at the office is thrown into disarray when she finds her next patient is an unwitting werewolf. And it doesn’t end there.
From the moment Caleb Kitt walks into Doctor Anneke Lund’s office for his psychiatry session, she knows his problem isn’t mental. He’s been experiencing night terrors, having violent and bloodthirsty dreams, and waking up naked in strange places. But he’s not losing his mind, as he suspects. He’s actually a werewolf—he just doesn’t know it yet.

Anneke isn’t just a psychiatrist—she’s also an empath, meaning she can read minds, and influence thoughts and behavior. She rarely uses her powers, but recognizes she may have no other choice as Caleb must be convinced of his supernatural status before the next full moon arrives. When it does, though, she finds herself going way beyond her duty of care to ensure Caleb doesn’t hurt or kill anyone when he transforms. But at what cost?

Excerpt:

Her head felt like it was going to explode. She had this great big secret just sitting in there, waiting to be let out, and it was like the longer she waited, the bigger it grew until it was pushing against the inside of her skull. Hard.
Damn it, she had no choice. With a man like Caleb, pussyfooting around wasn’t going to work. He obviously already had a ton of questions, and if she tried to drip feed him information and suggestions, hoping he’d arrive at the truth by himself, he’d keep querying everything until they ran out of time, and they wouldn’t be much further forward. As much as the prospect had made a large ball of dread appear in her stomach, threatening to make her sick, she had to drop the bombshell. Better to get it out there and deal with the fallout than risk him walking out the door at the end of their appointment none the wiser and presenting an unwitting danger to others.
“Caleb, I literally can’t think of any other way to put this, so I’m just going to come out with it. And, I’m warning you now, it’s going to sound crazy.”
“I thought you didn’t like that term?” he said with a smirk.
Heartened as she was to see the happier expression on his face, she knew what she was about to say would wipe it right off again. “I don’t when it comes to people, but I’m using it to describe a scenario. It’s acceptable then. Caleb...” She cleared her throat. “Could you, er, put your glass of water down, please?”
He frowned again, then complied. “All right, so come out with it then. Please. The suspense is killing me.”
I know exactly how you feel. “Do you... believe in werewolves?”
“What?” His face, just moments ago so pale, now infused with color. “Are you... what?” He shook his head vigorously, then seemed to lapse into deep thought, and Anneke had to resist the temptation to poke around in his head to see what was going on. But no, she’d wait, like a regular person, until he told her. She mentally crossed her fingers—and her toes—that curiosity would win out and he would stick around to see what she was getting at, rather than walking out. But then, she reminded herself, if that became a real possibility, she could use her gift to stop him. Or she could try, anyway—her talent for mind control wasn’t particularly strong because she so rarely practiced it. However, nothing about Caleb and his situation was typical, so thinking and acting outside of the box was necessary. She was sure that by the time all of this came to an end, she’d have left the box way, way behind—nothing but a distant memory.

Finally, just as she was on the verge of reaching out with her mind and giving his a little encouraging prod, Caleb broke the silence. “Anneke,” he said quietly, twisting his hands in his lap, “you don’t seem like the sort of woman to take the piss, not even outside of work, much less in a professional capacity. Also, the date isn’t April the first, which leads me to the only conclusion I’ve been able to come up with. You’re serious.”

Author Spotlight:

Hi – I’m Lucy Felthouse and I’m from Derbyshire, in England. When I’m not writing, I’m reading, promoting, on social media, watching TV or films, travelling, or out in the countryside with my other half and my dog, Scamp. I also like tea (obviously, it’s a requirement of being British) and chocolate. Especially Cadbury’s, in case you were wondering what to buy me as a gift.

How long have you been a writer and how did you come to writing?

I’ve been writing ever since I was a small child. I was forever scribbling away in notebooks and coming up with insane and fantastical stories. It came from my love of reading. I’ve been writing for publication since around 2006.

How did you come up with this storyline?

I’m not entirely sure how I come up with ideas—they just kind of pop into my head. I needed a storyline which was medical, and paranormal (I wanted to do paranormal since I did contemporary in the first Coming in Hot set), and wanted to go a little different with the medical aspect. Again. Last time it was a vet, this time it was a psychiatrist.

What are the best and the worst aspects of writing?

The best part is knowing people are reading and (hopefully) enjoying what you’ve created. The worst part is when you get stuck and aren’t sure how to move forward.

What inspires you to write?

Deadlines, mostly!

How did you conduct your research for A Werewolf State of Mind?

Obviously the werewolf aspect of it is entirely made up. But some of the things I had to Google while writing included mental health, sleeping tablets, full moon timings, tranquiliser guns and darts, UK gun laws, how long a stew needs to warm up in the oven. Yeah, I definitely need one of those bracelets that says to delete my browser history when I die.

What are 3 of your favorite quotes from A Werewolf State of Mind

“Do you... believe in werewolves?”

“So you want to see me outside of work?” He flashed her a cheeky grin. “Are you trying to ask me out on a date?”

“None of this is my fault, after all. I didn’t fucking ask for someone to turn me into a bloodthirsty supernatural creature, did I?”

What would your friends say is your best quality?

Possibly my silly sense of humour.

Are reader reviews important to you? Why?

Yes, because the good ones spur you on to keep writing, and the lukewarm or bad ones (mostly, once you’re done pulling faces at the computer) teach you where to improve.

What do you do when you don’t write? Like in “Real Life”

Real life? What is this real life you speak of? LOL. I gave this away earlier, really, in my introduction. I don’t do much else—I’m actually very boring!

Tell us about your other books?

I’ve currently started writing in a slightly new genre for me—reverse harem romance. This is basically where there’s one girl, and several guys, and she doesn’t have to choose between them. She gets to have them all! It’s not cheating—it’s like a polyamorous situation. I was persuaded to give it a go by a friend and found I really enjoyed it. Mia’s Men is the first book in The Heiress’s Harem series and has been doing really well: http://mybook.to/miasmen

I’ll shortly start work on the second book, Mia’s Wedding—though possibly by the time you read this interview it may well be finished, or even available. And then it’ll be straight onto book three—Mia’s Choice.

If you could share one thing about yourself that you would like readers to know what would it be?

We appreciate you.

Thank you so much for having me! I hope you’ll check out Coming in Hot: Rescue Me and all its amazing stories!
